Overview

Proper Names Must also have Verb / Subject Agreement
When proper names (like David, Abram, Sarah) are the subject, the verb must agree with the subject. Special verb prefixes &/or suffixes are used to indicate whether a verb was performed by a male or female. This would mean verbs have genders in Judean. Often times, the gender is translated as "she or he", other times, it is not, and just needs to indicate the sex performing the gender as a confirmation.

READING GOAL:
To recognize when proper names are masculine or female by reading verb form indications, and understand how to identify when this applies.

The Rule

Default Behavior: All proper names are treated as masculine, unless indicated otherwise

Why?

  • Judean verbs require gender agreement
  • The Judean Translator on Manakahthey.com cannot know name gender automatically, you must indicate it
  • For some verb forms in Judean, the male pronoun (subject) is grammatically "unmarked", indicating a male subject
  • When using the Judean Translator on this site, the user can override with (f) marker for female names
  • Visit Manakahthey.com/judean-translator to give it a try.
